Three Year Old Emilia Has Life-Saving Surgery

Michael Yurieff  | Published on 8/25/2017

Emilia was born with heart disease and Down syndrome. Emilia is three years old and needed to have her mitral valve replaced. Dr. Gorbachevsky, a specialist in pulmonary hypertension, examined Emilia at the Bakulev Center. He recommended that she get help soon.

Though the Bakulev Center had accepted Emilia for open-heart surgery, there were no funds available for the imported valve she needed to save her life. Without an operation, Emilia will get worse and may not live into adulthood.

Emilia's mother Yana is raising Emilia on her own. They live on Emilia's disability payments. Yana could not afford the $2,000 for the imported valve Emilia needs.

Thanks to generous donations to Russian Gift of Life USA's Save A Child Emergency Fund, Emilia had the open-heart surgery she so urgently needed. She was successfully operated on August 14, 2017 in Moscow. Emilia's mother Yana would like to thank everyone who helped save her little girl’s life.
