Five Year Old Receives The Gift of Life in Moscow

Michael Yurieff  | Published on 2/24/2017
Evgeni is five years old. He was born with heart disease. Dr. Sergei Gorbachevsky of the Bakulev Center in Moscow, Russia examined Evgeni and determined that a valve in his heart needed to be replaced.

Without open-heart surgery, Evgeni may not live to adulthood. The Bakulev Center accepted Evgeni for open-heart surgery. However, his condition would best be treated by implanting an imported heart valve, which is not covered under the Russian national health insurance.

As a result, Evgeni's parents appealed to the Russian Gift of Life USA for help. Evgeni's father, Evgeni Sr. works as a night watchman and Evgeni's mother, Elena, is a housewife. They cannot afford the cost of the imported valve. All other costs of the surgery are covered.

Thanks to compassionate gifts to Russian Gift of Life's Save A Child® Emergency Fund, Evgeni was able to receive a new, imported heart valve on January 26, 2017. He was discharged from the hospital on February 10, 2017 and made the long trip back from Moscow to his hometown of Arkhangelsk in the Arctic Circle.

Evegni's parents are very grateful to everyone who helped their son receive the gift of life.
