Maria is twelve years old. She was born with heart disease.
Maria has a ventricular septal defect and an atrial septal defect – more commonly known as holes in her heart. Specifically the ventricular defect is a hole between the wall that separates the lower heart chambers. The atrial septal defect is a hole between the wall that separates the upper heart chambers. Maria has lived with this life-threatening defect for twelve years! She has been waiting her whole life for help. Options for treatment where she lives are very limited. Dr. Gorbachevsky examined Maria at the Bakulev Center. He recommends that she get help soon.
If the defects are not repaired and the holes closed, Maria risks heart failure, atrial fibrillation, pulmonary over-circulation, pulmonary hypertension, stroke, and in several years - death. Maria is from Crimea.
The Bakulev Center has accepted Maria for medical treatment. Her defect can be closed without the need for open heart surgery using a device called an occluder. However, at the beginning of 2016, there were no funds available for Maria's procedure.
“Please help save our daughter.” – Elena Drozhzhova, Crimea.
Without this medical procedure, Maria will get worse and may not live into adulthood.
Maria was successfully operated on January 27, 2016.
