Both Kirill and Artem have life threatening congenital heart defects. Endovascular surgery can save their life. These little Russian boys have patent ductus arteriosus, a condition in which a blood vessel fails to close normally after birth. As a result, they have abnormal blood flow between the aorta and pulmonary artry, two major blood vessels that surround the heart. Options for medical treatment where they live are limited. In June 2015, Dr. Gorbachevsky examined both Artem and Kirill during a Russian Gift of Life USA sponsored screening mission.
Kirill and Artem have lived with this life threatening defect their whole life. If the defects are not repaired and the holes closed, Kirill and Artem risk heart failure, atrial fibrillation, pulmonary over-circulation, pulmonary hypertension and stroke. Kirill and Artem are from the Lipetsk Region of Russia.
