Eleven-Year-Old Girl Accepted for Life Saving Surgery

Michael Yurieff  | Published on 12/17/2015
Anastasia has a life threatening heart defect. Endovascular surgery can save her life. This girl has an atrial septal defect, more commonly known as a hole in the heart. Specifically, it's a hole between the wall that separates the upper chambers of the heart. As a result, blood continues to flow from the left to the right atria. If too much blood moves from the right side of the heart, pressure in the lungs builds up. Anastasia has lived with this defect her whole life. If the defect is not repaired and the hole closed, Anastasia risks heart failure, atrial fibrillation, pulmonary over-circulation, pulmonary hypertension or stroke. Anastasia is from the Lipetsk Region of Russia.
