Two year old Sasha Kharinov was born with an atrial septal defect. Problems with Sasha's heart were revealed already at the maternity hospital. They kept him under observation, but each visit to the doctor became more frigthening: there was no improvement. Sash was often sick. He was blue around his lips and eyes. In the spring of 2015, doctors said there was no way to avoid an operation. Surgeons at the Tomsk Cardiac Center offered to close the heart defect without cutting open Sasha's chest. At $5,076, the operation was too expensive for Sasha's family. They were not able to collect such a large sum. They turned to Rusfond in Moscow and Russian Gift of Life USA in New York. Together the two charities were able to raise the funds necessary for Sasha's operation. Sasha's story was even featured on local television in Russia.
