Two Girls Accepted for Life-Saving Heart Surgery at Saint Francis

Maria and Viktoria have life-threatening congenital heart defects. Endovascular surgery can save their lives. These little Russian girls both have a PDA (patent ductus arteriosus, a condition in which a blood vessel fails to close normally after birth. As a result, they have abnormal blood flow between the aorta and pulmonary artery, two major blood vessels that surround the heart. If their PDAs are not closed, they risk heart failure, bleeding in the lungs, problems with lung development, or endocarditis (an infection of the inner lining of the heart). The girls are from the Lipetsk Region of Russia.
