Russian Gift of Life USA Sponsors Screening Mission to Lipetsk

 | Published on 10/10/2011

Dr. Gorbachevsky and Dr. Kosenko examined two hundred children over a two day period this past weekend.
For some of the children, their diagnoses were changed to "no surgery needed." Others were told that no surgery is needed now. In a few years, however, surgery will be necessary. Some heart defects can be treated without the need for open heart surgery, using a medical device called an occluder. Some of the children whose defects can be closed endovascularly are selected for surgery in the United States.

Some difficult cases and some who need followup surgeries are invited to the Bakulev Center in Moscow. At the end of a long twelve hour day, Dr. Gorbachevsky makes a list of children that have been accepted for treatment on the Gift of Life program. The next step is gathering their medical records and submitting them to US hospitals participating in the Gift of Life Program. The children and their parents anxiously wait to hear if they have been accepted.
