On April 28-29, cardiac surgeon Dr. Gorbachevsky assisted by echo tech Marina Vladimirskaya traveled to Smolensk to screen children for heart defects. The city of Smolensk is some 225 miles southwest of Moscow and has a population of about 350,000 people. Smolensk is the birthplace of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space; Mikhail Glinka, the Russian composer; and the writer Isaac Asimov. This year Smolensk is celebrating the Fiftieth Anniversary of Gagarin's first flight into space.

Ministry of Health. Some one hundred and fifty children were screened
for heart disease. Due to the nature of their defect, several children
