Medical Mission to Tomsk Off to a Great Start

 | Published on 4/20/2011
Siberia welcomed them with unseasonably warm weather (65 F) and magnificent views of the ice-break on the Tom’ River.
The team is excited to see that their Tomsk colleagues have come a long way in the development of the pediatric cardiac program since the first mission in 2006. H2H can see evidence of the dramatic progress in the case of newborn baby Dima. A week prior to the team's arrival, the Tomsk pediatric cardiac team successfully performed the Hybrid procedure for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) on a 2.5 kg 12-day-old Dima who was diagnosed prenatally. This is the first time this complex new surgery was performed in Russia East of the Urals Mountains.
Newborns with HLHS have traditionally required either a Norwood operation or heart transplant.
Although improvements have been made to the Norwood operation, the surgical management of HLHS remains challenging. This hybrid approach is advantageous for babies who are considered high risk for the standard Norwood-Sano surgery, premature infants less than 3 kg, or those judged to be unsuitable for prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass.
