Three-year-old Sonya Myasnikova Has a Heart Defect. Endovascular Surgery Can Save Her Life. Please Help.

"Hello, I am Sonya's grandmother and I am writing in the hope that you can help us. My daughter is pregnant with her second child and is not feeling well. My son-in-law, a heating system operator, isn't capable of writing for assistance. He says he is just not able to sit down and write... He recently found work. Up to that point we survived on my salary as a nurse. We all live together in a wooden house, heated by one stove for eight families. We are recognized as meeting the definition of impoverished, a certificate attesting to this is attached. Our problem is the following: from birth Sonya has been under the observation of cardiologists and under medication, but all the same her heart isn't working right. Sonya tires easily, she becomes blue under the eyes and around the lips from the slightest strain. She eats poorly. She's so weak that even the nursery school won't accept her. Her heart defect is growing along with her. The doctors are urging an immediate operation, otherwise the defect will be difficult to repair. We are at our wit's end. What should we do? We can't raise enough money for an operation. Lots of thoughts enter our heads, even the most terrible ones. Please save Sonya! We wish all of you good people good health."

Dr. Evgeny Krivoshchekov, a leading specialist at the Tomsk Cardiac Center, says: "The location of the atrial septal defect allows it to be closed with a special device called an occluder, which is inserted through the vein. As the defect is large, 8mm, we can no longer postpone the operation. After the operation, Sonya will be healthy and can develop normally like other children her age."

Sonya was successfully operated at the Tomsk Cardiac Center in Siberia, Russia on March 30, 2011.

Dr. Krivoshchekov noted the complete elimination of the congenital heart defect, "at the post-surgical examination, no blood flow through the septum registers. Sonya is healthy. She will grow and develop normally."

Sonya's grandmother Larisa thanks everyone who helped.
