HomeNikonov, Mikhail

Sixteen-Year-Old Mikhail Has Patent Ductus Arteriosus. Heart Surgery Can Save His Life. Please Help.

Mikhail has a PDA, (patent ductus arteriosus), a condition in which a blood vessel fails to close normally after birth. As a result, he has abnormal blood flow between the aorta and pulmonary artery, two major blood vessels that surround the heart. A defect like this is usually taken care of in the first few years of life. But where Mikhail is from, doctors take a "wait and see" approach. They hope it will close on its own. On an annual screening mission, Dr. Sergei Gorbachevsky of the Bakulev Center in Moscow examined Mikhail. He recommended having the PDA closed without delay. If the PDA is not closed, Mikhail risks heart failure, bleeding in the lungs, problems with lung development, or endocarditis (an infection of the inner lining of the heart). Mikhail is from Lipetsk, Russia. Mikhail's father, Vladimir, made the long journey from Russia with him.

Gift of Life, Inc. and Russian Gift of Life raised over $5,000 for Mikhail's surgery and travel expenses.

"Mikhail had the heart of a 70 year-old man," said Sean Levchuck, M.D., Chairman of Pediatric Cardiology, Saint Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York.  Fortunately for Mikhail, his heart defect was corrected and he can now live a normal life.

Gift of Life, Inc. and Russian Gift of Life, USA raised the funds necessary for Mikhail's surgery and travel expenses thanks to your generosity.

Mikhail was successfully operated at Saint Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York on December 22, 2010.
