Four-Year-Old Sergei Titov Has Patent Ductus Arteriosus. Heart Surgery Can Save His Life. Please Help.

Sergei is an active four-year-old child. You'd never know he has a life threatening heart defect. Little Sergei has a PDA (patent ductus arteriosus), a condition in which a blood vessel fails to close normally after birth. As a result, he has abnormal blood flow between the aorta and pulmonary artery, two major blood vessels that surround the heart. If the PDA is not closed, Sergei risks heart failure, bleeding in the lungs, problems with lung development, or endocarditis (an infection of the inner lining of the heart). Sergei is from Lipetsk, Russia.

Russian Gift of Life, USA raised the funds needed for Sergei's heart surgery and travel expenses from Russia to the United States thanks to your generosity.

"Sergei's PDA was so large that in another three years he would have been inoperable," says Sean Levchuck, M.D., Chairman of Pediatric Cardiology, Saint Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York.

Sergei was successfully operated at Saint Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York on February 9, 2011.
