Save A Child from Heart Disease
Please Help Save Vera.

Vera was born with heart disease.

Vera is one year old and has a ventricular septal defect. A ventricular septal defect (VSD) describes one or more holes in the wall that separates the right and left ventricles of the heart. Ventricular septal defect is one of the most common congenital (present from birth) heart defects. It may occur by itself or with other congenital diseases. The most common symptoms of a VSD include: shortness of breath, hard breathing, paleness, failure to gain weight, and frequent respiratory infections.

Vera is a child with complex history of heart and brain problems. Her operation was similar to many done on the fifth medical mission to Nizhny Novgorod, but her recovery was more limited by her non-cardiac issues. She came off the ventilator two days postoperatively and was still in the ICU at the end of the trip - breathing unaided and continuing her recovery.

The Gift of Life, Inc. and Russian Gift of Life USA are helping to fund medical training missions to Nizhny Novgorod, where Vera was operated. The first mission took place in November 2014.

Vera was successfully operated on April 12, 2017.
