In Memoriam: Marina Shelehoff

“To a Good Life"

Mrs. Marina Shelehoff was born Marina Sergeevna Wojciechowski in Poland and passed away on August 8, 2014. She was a very intelligent, loving person who during her 84 years touched many people. Born and raised in Poland to Russian parents, she witnessed the horrors of World War II in Warsaw and spent two years in a displaced persons camp in Germany before immigrating to the United States in 1948.

Marina had exceptional language skills and spoke Russian, Polish, German, French, Spanish, and English fluently. These skills brought her a job as an assistant professor of Russian at Vassar College. Marina married and had a son, Nicholas Mushin Pushkin, who passed away in 2004. After several years at Vassar, she joined the U.S. Customs Service and had a distinguished career of almost 40 years.
After divorcing her first husband, Marina married Nicholas Shelehoff and became a loving stepmother to his two daughters, and later was a wonderful grandmother to four grandsons and a great grandmother to five boys. Marina had many friends who enjoyed, admired, and appreciated her sharp wit, warmth, sensitivity, and intelligence. Throughout her life she volunteered her time by working in hospitals, senior citizens homes, and with less fortunate people. She especially enjoyed her volunteer work at the Gift of Life organization where she assisted patients and families who came to the U.S. for medical treatment. In her will she indicated that a gift of $10,000 be donated to Russian Gift of Life USA to be used to help others. Marina's gift is giving new hope to children with heart defects and their families.
