Eleven-Year-Old Liana Has A Heart Defect. Open Heart Surgery Can Save Her Life. Please Help.

Liana is eleven years old. She was admitted to the hospital with severe shortness of breath and heart failure. She previously had open-heart surgery in 2004 to correct an atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD). This defect occurs when there's a hole between the chambers of the heart and problems with the valves that regulate blood flow in the heart. An AVSD allows extra blood to circulate to the lungs causing the heart to overwork itself and to enlarge. This defect is often associated with Down syndrome. If left untreated, an atrioventricular canal defect may cause heart failure and high blood pressure in the lungs.

Liana's echocardiogram now shows typical signs of mitral valve incompetence. $3,204 is needed to cover the costs of the
ATS replacement valve that can save Liana's life.
Russian Gift of Life USA raised the funds needed to save Liana's life.

Liana was successfully operated at the Bakulev Center in Moscow on September 3, 2013.

Dr. Sergei Gorbachevsky, a leading specialist at the Bakulev Center, surgically replaced Liana's mitral valve. Liana was discharged on September 25, 2013 and returned home to the Vladimirovsk region of Russia a healthy girl. Her parents Alexander and Tatiana thank everyone who helped their daughter become a healthy child.
