Nine-Year-Old Danila Has a Heart Defect.
Heart Surgery Can Save His Life. Please Help.
Danila is a nine-year-old boy with a congenital heart defect. He also suffers from Down's Syndrome. Endovascular
surgery can save his life. The full cost of the operation is $43,000.
Dr. Sean Levchuck at Saint Francis Hospital will perform the surgery for
free, but the cost of expendable medical supplies, airfare,
living expenses and support for the family is $8,565. Russian Gift of Life USA’s
Moscow partner the children’s charity Rusfond has funded the
family’s flight (Moscow – New York – Moscow) for $2,181. Russian Gift
of Life USA and Gift of Life, Inc. raised the additional $6,384 needed for Danila's
heart surgery and related expenses.
Danila has a PDA (patent ductus arteriosus), a condition in which a blood vessel fails to
close normally after birth. As a result, he has abnormal blood flow
between the aorta and pulmonary artery, two major blood vessels that
surround the heart. If the PDA is not closed, Danila risks heart
failure, bleeding in the lungs, problems with lung development, or
endocarditis (an infection of the inner lining of the heart). Danila is from a small village in the Lipetsk Region of
Danila's defect can be treated without
the need for open-heart surgery.
Through a minimally invasive
catheter-based procedure, Dr. Levchuck, Chairman of Pediatric Cardiology at Saint
Francis Hospital, will be able to correct the boy's
heart condition and improve his life.
Danila's life-saving heart surgery was successfully completed on August 15, 2012.
