Three-Year-Old Diana Has A Heart Defect. Heart Surgery Can Save Her Life. Please Help.

Little Diana has pulmonary valve stenosis, a birth defect. This defect is a heart valve disorder that involves the pulmonary valve. This valve separates the right ventricle, one of the chambers in the heart,  and the pulmonary artery. The pulmonary artery carries oxygen-poor blood to the lungs. Stenosis occurs when the valve cannot open wide enough. As a result less blood flows into the lungs. Pulmonary valve stenosis is a rare disorder.

Diana also has an atrial septal defect. This is a normal opening between the upper chambers of the heart that unfortunately did not close at the time Diana was born. Blood continues to flow from the left to the right atria. If too much blood moves to the right side of the heart, pressures in the lungs build up.

Without treatment for these birth defects, little Diana is at risk of chest pain, fatigue, frequent respiratory infections, shortness of breath and even sudden death from heart failure. Diana is from the Lipetsk Region, Russia.

Through the Evening of Hope Benefit Concert, Russian Gift of Life has raised the funds needed for Diana's heart surgery and travel expenses from Russia.

Through a minimally invasive catheter-based procedure, Sean Levchuck, M.D., Chairman of Pediatric Cardiology at Saint Francis Hospital will be able to correct the little girl's condition so she can live a normal life like other children her age.

Diana was successfully operated at Saint Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York on August 3, 2011
